Updating Your Building’s Safety Procedures

Newly Built 7 WTCIf you run a business or company, with even just a small number of employees and visiting clients, then it is essential that the safety procedures within your offices and company arein order. Whilst all businesses will undoubtedly have safety systems of some sort in place, it is very likely that they have not been checked or updated in a very long period of time.

It is important to remember, however, that the safety in your workplace should be the number one consideration, at all times. This article considers how you can update the safety procedures in your company to ensure that you are meeting regulations, and that you are keeping your customers andstaff safe.

Check the Equipment

Even if you have fire alarms and smoke detectors, you will not be protected from fires or lawsuits, if they have no batteries, or simply do not work. In an office, you will likely have a number of escape routes that utilise doors and windows, or fire escape ladders. Such systems need to be checked, because if you cannot escape through escape routes, then they are simply a hazard.

First-aid supplies should also be checked and replenished on a regular basis, so that you are sure to always have what you need when it is required. Other elements to check and consider, include fire extinguishers and fire blankets. Having all of the appropriate equipment for an emergency in your company is essential and, without it, you will not be meeting necessary regulations.

Check the Procedures

Even if you have a policy in place about what to do in the case of a fire, or other emergency, it is essential that you ensure these procedures are followed appropriately, and are understood by all. First-aid procedures and emergency exit procedures should be included in the company compliance training given to all staff when they begin employment, and should be practiced through drills on a regular basis. Remember that testing a system, which simply doesn’t work, and correcting it,is far better than having a system that fails when it is actually needed.

Establish a Safety Group

Establishing a safety group from within the staff of your office or warehouse is always a good idea. These people will be responsible for ensuring that all safety considerations are taken into account. In this group, it is wise to include people from all levels of the company hierarchy, if at all possible, because this will give you a real insight into safety, at all levels of the company. The group should also carry out audits to determine where safety issues may lie.

Keep Records

In order to meet government regulations, you will necessarily have to keep records of all safety-related developments. Recording fire drills and the completion of training by staff is essential, so that you can demonstrate your successful implementation of safety procedures, if it is ever asked of you. All safety meetings should be minuted, and training for safety must essentially be compulsory for all members of staff, to keep them safe in the workplace.
